School of Biosystems and Biomedical Sciences

Overview

The School of Biosystems and Biomedical Sciences at Korea University offers an integrative, multidisciplinary research and education program that combines biomedical and bio-food sciences. We are raising global leaders in the rapidly growing biomedical sciences and bio-food industry, which will be the growth engine for the future.

Human Health Designer, School of Biosystems and Biomedical Sciences

Human beings have sought healthy and happy life. Biosystems and Biomedical Sciences is a field that studies the principles of life maintenance and their applications to human health and industry. In the School of Biosystems and Biomedical Sciences, we define the nature of life through microscopic analysis at a molecular and cellular level and engage in macroscopic, integrative researches that focus on the prevention of diseases and health promotion through studies of diversity of life, discovery of genetic or environmental pathogens, diagnosis using bio-markers, development of cellular or pharmacological therapy, improvement of functional food and natural products, studies of food safety and the physio-chemical characteristics of food, and improvement in life quality via the advanced dietary habit as well.

Because of the complexity of life phenomena related to health, a complete interpretation is not possible without understanding the interaction between organisms. Thus, to work with life phenomena, interest and integrative understanding and approach in basic sciences such as biology, physics, genetics, and molecular/cellular biology as well as in applied sciences such as population genetics, food science, nutritional science, toxicology, food culture, sociology, and environmental ecology, are needed. To interpret the principles of life and understand the relationship of an organism with its environment, Biosystems and Biomedical Sciences explains the life phenomena from the smallest molecular level to the macroscopic population level.

Biomedicine Industry

Biomedical industry is an integral part in creating higher-added value products such as next-generation medicine and functional cosmetics. As the interdisciplinary merging of high-tech biological sciences and medical sciences has created a new research trend in the drug development and the diagnosis and treatment for various diseases, the education in our school plays an important role in the development of national health industry.

Bio-food Industry

Bio-food industry is a national growing engine and convergence science. Due to the recent advancement of the bio-food science and technology and the trend towards healthier life style, various food products with higher nutritional value, favorable properties, safety, and functionality are gaining research interests. Along with medicinal products, bio-food products having various functional properties are projected to play an extremely important role in the future biotechnology market, and bio-food science will play a critical role in commercializing the bio-food products.
